Digital Media Arts and Performance Village

Mission Statement: At the request of the university
I created a nexus of interdisciplinary collaborations in research, education, creativity, and content development.
This was to be facilitated by the study and application of digital technologies in the design and applied arts, studio art,
music, mass communication, film, and performance arts.
Concept: The reflection of both aspects necessary
for design using digital media: The Technology and the Raw Natural Creativity. Thus, through the vehicle
of technology is creativity's end product found.
This concept influenced my design
in not only the placement of the buildings and their relationship to one another, but also in designing the detailed personalities
of each area.

The initial inspiration for the form of the Technological aspect of the concept
was discovered while studying a number of electronic "innards" (circuit boards and such) and microscopic views of data chips.
This concept was illustrated by enclosing the entire complex with three Modern-style
architectural buildings very similar to the strong geometric forms used by both Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson.
All three are purposefully placed to focus inward toward the center of the complex. The adjoining plazas and surrounding
walks reflect the hard geometric design in their shapes as well as paving patterns, seat benches, and lighting fixtures.
For the interior of the complex, I wanted the personality to be of a looser,
more biomorphic quality. This was expressed by using rounded and sometimes random shapes. The initial inspiration
for the Raw Natural Creativity aspect of the concept came from studying natural forms in nature, such as various bacteria,
amoeba, and other life forms.
This is reflected in the architecture as well as the adjoining plazas and surrounding
walks in that they both seem to curve and twist, fluctuating in width as well as elevation at times.
I chose the Outdoor Sound and Performance Amphitheater to be placed in the direct
center of the complex to give the feeling of culmination and finality...performance being the end result of the creativity
brought to substance through technology. The inspiration for the shape was found in research of the reaction of water
to single pinpointed stimulation. The rippling effect used in the amphitheater seems to overshoot its own boundaries
through the elevated walks orbiting it.
